Preconception Counselling

Overview

Preconception counselling is a scheduled appointment that is conducted to prepare for a much-anticipated pregnancy. During these appointments, Dr Kalwiba will discuss your family history of the disease, risk factors that could affect the pregnancy, chronic medications and lifestyle changes.

Procedure

First, Dr Kalwiba will carry out several tests to determine how healthy you are, one of which includes a physical exam. During a physical exam, your OB-GYN will check certain parts of your body, such as the heart, lungs, abdomen, breasts and thyroid. Next, he will perform a pelvic exam to assess your gynaecological health.

Blood and culture tests are done to prevent any issues that may occur during pregnancy or at the time of delivery. Normally, blood pressure is taken regularly, which is a routine medical check.

Other medical tests involve checking for sickle cell disease and Tay-Sachs, conditions that can be passed on to family members.

Results

The results of each test will determine how fit and healthy you are. In addition, Dr Kalwiba will recommend taking prenatal vitamins with at least 400-800 micrograms of folic acid. Folic acid is incredibly important to help maintain the health of the growing baby’s spinal cord and brain. Furthermore, folic acid is essential for the secretion of white and red blood cells. Another test your OB-GYN may decide to order is a creatinine test, which is done to assess kidney function; this is typically ordered when you have had trouble with hypertension in the past.

Diet is also extremely important, so eating nutritious meals before pregnancy is imperative to ensure you deliver a healthy baby. Furthermore, a good diet will ensure you are healthy throughout the three trimesters. For this reason, Dr Kalwiba will refer you to a dietician beforehand.

Pregnancy Plan

It's important to determine who will be seeing you at the time of your pregnancy and the delivery method (Caesarean/C-section, vaginal or forceps delivery) you are most comfortable with.
